In Cleo from 5 to 7, this opening sequence of a tarot card reading was the only one shot in color. I think Varda uses it to symbolize the reading as an illusion masquerading as an understanding of truth, while the rest of the film where the reality of her existence unfolds is shot in black and white. The film is about pop singer Cleo waiting to discover her fate with medical biopsy results. It takes place in the first person. We see the many truths and realizations with the actual time passing until she gets her results (6:30) while simultaneously experiencing that time, realizing that her mortality is near. Throughout the film, we are privy to an intimate look at Paris in the ’60s. In the end, Cleo peels back the many layers to herself, realizing the difference between who she is as opposed to who she pretends to be. #agnesvarda #cleofrom5to7 #criterioncollection #frenchnewwave #feminism #paris
